The plot begins on Mercury, in the moving city of Terminator, which runs on tracks to remain in the planet’s habitable zone. After Alex’s funeral, a meeting includes Fitz Wahram, a diplomat from Titan, and Jean Genette, a police detective exiled from Mars. Swan then travels to Io to deliver a message to Wang, a friend of Alex’s who built one of the largest quantum computers, or qubes. While she is there, a failed attack occurs, followed by a devastating strike on Terminator: an artificial meteorite destroys the city’s tracks, stopping it and exposing it to the Sun, effectively cooking it. As Swan journeys across the Solar System with Wahram and Genette, she uncovers a conspiracy tied to Alex’s death and the destruction of her home.
Genette discovers that the meteorite was created by launching many small objects that coalesced above Mercury, too low for the planet’s defenses to stop.
